Subject description: Over the two years students will study a range of aspects of the history of Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome to develop an understanding of the ancient world and how it’s legacy affects society today. Our A Level in Ancient History aims to develop an enthusiasm and interest in the military, political, religious, social and cultural history of the ancient world and build an understanding of Greek and Roman history in the context of their neighbouring civilisations. We will explore significant events, individuals, identities and societies using historical evidence, and build an understanding of how the past has been represented by ancient historians and interpreted by modern scholars. |
Units studied: Unit one: Greek period study - Relations between Greek states and between Greek and non-Greek states, 492–404 BC Unit two: Greek depth study - The Politics and Society of Sparta, 478–404 BC Unit three: Roman period study - The Julio-Claudian Emperors (from Augustus to Nero), 31 BC–AD 68 Unit four: Roman depth study - Ruling Roman Britain, AD 43–c.128 |
How the course is assessed: Units one and two are examined together on Paper 1, with each unit worth 25%. Units two and three are examined together on Paper 2, with each unit worth 25%. Examinations are taken in Year 13. |
Post 18 Opportunities: Ancient History is a rigorous academic subject that is widely respected by universities and employers. It will develop analytic and evaluative skills through the study of both source material and the competing historical explanations it has led to. These are highly transferrable skills that are held in high regard in a wide range of professions.
